RAD AND HUNGRY

Just before Thanksgiving, Laura Dedon, from Rad and Hungry contacted me and provided some information regarding a new company that she is involved in - RAD AND HUNGRY, she asked if I would feature the company and the products here at Whatever.

I took a look at the website and the products that they planned to offer and I have to say that I was impressed.  The following is from the RAD AND HUNGRY website:

The Something Mighty Collection by RAD AND HUNGRY is a monthly series of travel-inspired, locally sourced, stylie goods for those who love office supplies as much as creators Sam Alston and Hen Chung.
“Every time we traveled together, we synched up in a path of mad consumption that would gather momentum during the trip,” says Hen Chung. “One of each postcard at the museum. One of each patterned scarf, and one for my mom. And one for your mom. Two of each beer. Order everything on the menu, we’ll split it. Good thing these pencils come in packs of twelve…
“The common thread was design, but unrefined design – ‘local’ in the sense that it’s so basic and part of the everyday landscape that people in that country find it unremarkable. The kitschy outdated postcard, the shoes people wear when cleaning house, the cheapest brew, the #2 pencil. We’re taken by the concept that simple, daily items are given new meaning through travel. It transforms the mundane into something inspired.
“We wanted to transfer that experience through design without altering the fundamentals inside. Each kit is focused on office supplies—the everyday basics. Everyone can take ‘em and use ‘em, make something, get down!”
RAD AND HUNGRY LLC pushes design through travel and travel through design. The company was founded by Sam Alston and Hen Chung in Seattle, October 2010.

Basically, each month you will have the opportunity to purchase low tech, i.e. pencil and paper, supplies which originate in a different country.

There are three options to purchase the kits - monthly ($16 per kit), quarterly ($14 per kit) and annually ($12 per kit).  Each kit will contain 4 items: 1. Writing Instrument, 2. Paper Goods, 3. Mystery Item and 4. The Low Down.  (The Low Down is the complete story of the trip to the country where the products originated).

Laura provided a spec sheet for the initial, STMT X COLOMBIA KIT:  The goods in the STMT X Colombia Kit have been sourced from local dealers in Bogotá and Cartegena, Colombia. They are items for everyday use — the daily supplies purchased and used by locals

I hope to get my hands on one of the monthly kits in the very near future, so I will post a followup when I do. In the meantime, be sure to follow RAD AND HUNGRY on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with all the news. I agree, I would have absolutely loved receiving such a monthly package as a kid (well, I still would)! I was obsessed with maps and learning all I could about the world - these kits would have made that obsession of mine that much more exciting!

I grew up obsessed about maps, too! I still can't part with my old atlases/maps that are outdated!

I love the snow globes I collect from the places I visit, but I especially love my functional souvenirs - pens, pencils, and journals! I hope others appreciate them as much as I do.
